What is low surface energy tape

Low surface energy tape is a type of industrial adhesive product specifically designed for bonding low surface energy materials. These materials have low surface tension and are difficult to wet, making it impossible for ordinary double-sided tape to form

1. Core definitions and applicable materials
1. Criteria for determining low surface energy materials
Materials with a surface tension of less than 35 mN/m are commonly referred to as low surface energy materials. These materials have smooth surfaces and strong chemical inertia, making it difficult for ordinary acrylic adhesives and hot melt adhesives to adhere to them.
2. Typical applicable materials
Plastics: polypropylene (PP), polyethylene (PE), polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), nylon (PA), modified plastic parts;
Coatings: PP/EPDM coatings for car bumpers, matte coatings for home appliance casings, powder-coated surfaces;
Other types: elastomeric materials such as silicone, rubber, and fluororubber.
II. Core characteristics of low surface energy tape
The adhesive layer has a special formula
The mainstream approach involves the use of modified acrylic or silicone adhesives, supplemented with high-adhesion resins and tackifiers, to enhance the wettability and bonding strength to low surface energy substrates;
Some high-end products utilize cross-linkable adhesive layers, which, after bonding, undergo chemical reactions to form stronger chemical bonds, offering superior temperature resistance and weather resistance.
Strong adaptability to substrates
Commonly used substrates include foam (EVA, PE foam), PET film, and non-woven fabric. Among them, foam substrates can fill the tiny gaps on the surface of materials, enhancing bonding and sealing performance;
Ultra-thin PET substrates are suitable for bonding scenarios requiring high precision and low thickness (such as the fixation of electronic components).
High construction tolerance
The cleaning requirements for the surface of the adherend are slightly lower than those for ordinary adhesive tape (but oil stains and heavy dust still need to be removed);
Some products support the bonding of low surface energy materials without the need for primer, eliminating the primer application step and enhancing production efficiency.
III. Key Technical Indicators of Low Surface Energy Tape
Indicator Core Requirement Function
Initial adhesion force ≥10# steel ball (rolling ball method) Rapid positioning after bonding to prevent displacement
Adhesion strength ≥72h (2kg load, 40℃) - capable of withstanding load for a long time without detachment
Peel strength ≥ 8 N/25mm (for PP substrate) to ensure no delamination occurs at the bonding interface
Temperature range: -40℃~120℃ (regular model)
Suitable for outdoor use and high/low temperature environments
Weather resistance: UV resistance, aging resistance, moisture and heat resistance. Suitable for bonding automotive exterior parts and outdoor equipment
IV. Construction precautions (preventing glue overflow + enhancing bonding effect)
Selection and matching
Bonding extremely difficult-to-bond materials such as PP/PE: Silicone-modified acrylic adhesive tape is preferred;
Bonding silicone parts: Use a dedicated silicone-type low surface energy tape to avoid debonding.
pressure control
The recommended bonding pressure is between 0.4-0.8 MPa. Excessive pressure may cause the adhesive layer to extrude and overflow;
Apply pressure evenly using rollers to avoid localized high pressure.
Environmental Requirements
The construction temperature should be controlled between 15-30℃. Low temperatures will reduce the fluidity of the adhesive layer, affecting the wetting effect;
Avoid working in high humidity environments (RH > 70%) to prevent the adhesive layer from absorbing water, which could affect the bonding strength.
Die-cutting optimization
Using the internal shrinkage die-cutting process, the adhesive tape size is shrunk by 0.3-0.5mm compared to the fitting surface, leaving space for excess adhesive;
The die-cutting edges need to be smooth and free of burrs to prevent the adhesive layer from overflowing from the burrs.
V. Common application scenarios
Automotive industry: bumper fixing, body trim bonding, door seal installation;
Home appliance industry: fixing the inner liner of refrigerators/washing machines, and bonding the components of air conditioning casings;
Packaging industry: sealing of PE/PP material packaging boxes, and pasting of plastic labels;
Electronics industry: lithium battery housing fixation, plastic housing component bonding.
