Fireproof and flame-retardant materials

Fireproof and flame-retardant materials refer to those capable of preventing or slowing the spread of flames, reducing heat and toxic smoke released during combustion. These materials are widely used in high-fire-safety-demand fields such as construction,

1. Inorganic Fireproof and Flame-Retardant Materials
This type of material is inherently non-combustible, exhibits excellent high-temperature resistance, and releases no toxic smoke when burning, making it a fundamental material in the fire protection field.
Cotton / Mineral wool
Made from natural rocks or slag through high-temperature melting and fiberization, it has a melting point exceeding 1000°C, is non-combustible, has low thermal conductivity, and combines fireproofing, thermal insulation, and soundproofing functions.
Application scenarios: External wall insulation for buildings, fireproof cladding for steel structures, and filling for electronic equipment casings.
glass wool
Fiber material made from glass as raw material, Class A non combustible, stable fire resistance, and good sound absorption effect.
Application scenarios: Central air conditioning duct fire insulation, car engine compartment sound insulation and fire protection layer, machine room wall partition.
2、 Organic fire-resistant and flame-retardant materials
These materials are inherently flammable or combustible, and their fire resistance can be improved by adding flame retardants and modifying processes, while also considering their mechanical properties such as toughness and plasticity.
flame retardant plastic
Flame retardant PP/PE: Bromine based, phosphorus based flame retardants or inorganic hydroxides are added to polypropylene and polyethylene to achieve UL94 V-0 flame retardant standards, with no dripping and slow flame spread during combustion. Application scenarios: Automotive interior parts (door panels, seat frames), charging station casings, electrical switches.
Flame retardant ABS/PC: After adding flame retardants to ABS and PC alloy materials, they have both high strength and high flame retardancy, as well as impact resistance and high temperature resistance. Application scenarios: Laptop casings, interior panels of rail transit carriages, and casings of firefighting equipment.
Flame retardant rubber
Flame retardant EPDM: EPDM rubber is added with flame retardants such as aluminum hydroxide and chlorinated paraffin to increase its oxygen index, making it suitable for sealing components in high temperature and open flame environments. Application scenarios: Automotive engine compartment sealing strips, fire door sealing strips, cable joint sheaths.
Flame retardant silicone: Silicone rubber itself is resistant to high temperatures, and after adding flame retardants, it can be used for a long time above 200 ℃, producing only a small amount of white smoke when burned. Application scenarios: New energy vehicle battery pack seals, household appliance gaskets, high-temperature resistant wire insulation layers.
3、 Fire resistant and flame-retardant composite materials
Combining the advantages of inorganic and organic materials, with fire resistance, mechanical properties, and functionality, it is a commonly used material in the high-end field.
Fireproof, flame-retardant and sound-absorbing cotton
Made from polyester fiber as the substrate, impregnated with flame retardant, it has the functions of sound absorption, noise reduction, fire resistance and flame retardancy, and does not produce toxic gases during combustion.
Application scenarios: sound-absorbing layers for car interiors, sound-absorbing and fire-resistant materials for KTV/machine room walls, and soundproofing panels for rail transit carriages.
Flame retardant carbon fiber composite material
Adding flame-retardant resin to carbon fiber matrix has the characteristics of high strength, lightweight, and flame retardancy, with high oxygen index and extremely slow flame spread speed.
Application scenarios: aerospace components, new energy vehicle body structural components, high-end fire protection equipment casings.
4、 Core performance indicators of fire-resistant and flame-retardant materials
Oxygen Index (OI): The  concentration of oxygen required for material combustion, with an OI ≥ 27 indicating flame retardant materials and ≥ 32 indicating non combustible materials.
UL94 flame retardant rating: The commonly used plastic flame retardant standard is divided into three levels: V-0, V-1, and V-2. V-0 level requires short combustion time and no dripping.
Smoke Density Rating (SDR): An indicator that measures the amount of smoke produced during material combustion. The lower the value, the higher the fire safety.
5、 Trend of environmentally friendly fire-resistant and flame-retardant materials
Traditional bromine based flame retardants have environmental controversies, and the industry is gradually shifting towards halogen-free flame retardant technologies, such as phosphorus based flame retardants, nitrogen phosphorus composite flame retardants, and inorganic hydroxide flame retardant systems. These materials release no toxic or harmful substances during combustion and comply with environmental standards such as RoHS and REACH.
